Formula for a Healthy Septic System Print E-mail
Keeping a septic system in tiptop shape takes a little thought and some, care but it beats the alternative—expensive maintenance or replacement. Here are a few tips that you can use to keep your system in tiptop shape and help.

Do:

* Keep a plot plan, showing the location of the septic tank access cover and layout of the distribution field. (Plot the X and Y distance from corners of your house on your house deed and keep this in a safe place.) * Have the septic tank cleaned—or at least inspected—every two years. * Flush ½ pound of brewer’s yeast dissolved in warm water down a toilet twice a year to help promote bacterial digestion. * Space out the interval between baths, showers, and clothes washer loads if you have an influx of guests. * Locate gutter downspouts to divert rainwater away from the distribution field.

Don’t:

* Use a garbage disposal to dispose of food waste through the septic system. Instead, create a compost pile. The compost will be invaluable in you garden. * Use commercial drain cleaners any more than you have to because they kill the anaerobic bacteria. * Flush coffee grounds, paper goods other than white toilet tissue, or grease down any drain. Pour chemicals, such as paint thinner, paint stripper, bleach, pesticide, or photographic developer down a drain.
